Most insurance companies cover the use of like kind material

First Category Of Discontinued Shingles

Obviously discontinued shingles

Organic

Decades ago many shingle manufacturers in order to save money made shingles with a cardboard base instead of fiberglass. These shingles predictably performed very poorly. If your shingles are rumply, rotting, or peeling off of your roof, chances are your shingles are organic. All organic shingles are thankfully discontinued.

Metric

If you have 3 tab shingles that measure a meter across instead of 36 inches, you have metric shingles. Except for a very few geographic regions around The Country they are totally unavailable and are therefore considered to be discontinued.

T-locks

If your roof looks like the worlds most redundant puzzle you have T-lock shingles. These shingles were thought to hold up better under high wind conditions. This was not the case which is why they were discontinued. They are typically only found in high wind States like Wyoming. Second Category Of Discontinued Shingles

Less obviously discontinued shingles

Betty Crocker Cookbook patterned shingles

If you remember the old Betty Crocker Cookbooks from 20 years ago you will see where these roofs got their names from. A dark red, a light red, and white in a swirl pattern. These shingles are also often found in shades of green. Most of these shingles have been discontinued for decades.

Custom shingles

If you've never seen another house with your shingles before, chances are you have specialty shingles. Most specialty shingles have a limited time in production and then they are discontinued.

Elk/GAF Capstone shingles

A niche shingle manufactured over a decade ago, Though some people liked the cobblestone look of these shingles; they did not sell well enough to justify continued production. Since they are no longer produced, they are considered to be discontinued.

There are too many categories of discontinued shingles to be listed on this one webpage additional info available at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1254084998288842/
