Missing or even lifted shingles can be the result of damage caused by wind. If it is determined that it was caused by a windstorm you could be getting a new roof.
Most of the time this cannot be identified from the ground. If hail hit hard enough to shatter the glue which holds your shingles together, you could be getting a new roof.
